Julia Wang is a 20 year old student currently working as a Research Assistant for the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy's McNair Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Julia currently lives in the Houston area and attends Rice University.
Julia was born in Fairfax, Virginia, to parents Yanchun and Lei Wang. Her father and mother immigrated from Beijing, China, where Yanchun taught at Tsinghua University, with Julia's sister Lisa to Ames, Iowa, in 1994. In 1996, the Wang family moved to Fairfax, and when Julia was 3 months old, they moved to the Bay Area, California. They eventually settled in San Jose, and Yanchun and Lei currently work as software engineers in the Silicon Valley. Julia grew up speaking both English and her parents' native language of Mandarin, and later learned French during her middle and high school years.
Julia is a junior student majoring in Economics and Art History at Rice University. She is also pursuing a Certificate in Civic Leadership, and resides at the residential college of Baker.
Aside from interning at the McNair Center, Julia is involved in many organizations at Rice University. She serves as the Executive Vice-President for the Baker Institute Student Forum, the Secretary for the Rice Entrepreneurship Club, the Design Editor of the Campanile Yearbook, and a Communications Committee member for the Rice University Student Association. At her college, she also serves as an O-Week Peer Academic Advisor.
Julia has worked as a Research Analyst for sustainability consulting firm Collective Responsibility, an Operations Coordinator of Technology and Data for the non-profit Teach For America, a lifeguard for Rice University, and a private tutor in French, writing, and calculus.
