The [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:BibManager BibManager extension] isn't actively maintained, but it doesn't seem like it needs to be constantly updated to accommodate for new features and was last updated for Mediawiki version 1.22, which isn't too bad.
Let's test on the test web server first.

** how much focus on customization? if we're mostly focused on getting traffic and clean editing interfaces, then Medium seems like a good choice (no self-hosting though)

** I haven't used Ghost before, but it seems like a good alternative to Wordpress.
** Anchor also looks cool (lightweight and open-source)
